Several certified music therapists have obtained their master’s degree in music therapy. In recent years, a growing number of certified music therapists are also pursuing doctoral studies in music therapy or in a related field. The AQM believes that the entry level for music therapy training should be a Master’s level within the next few years.

To practice their profession, certified music therapists must be certified by the Canadian Association of Music Therapists and remain members in good standing in order to maintain their status as certified music therapists (MTA). An internship including 1,000 hours of supervised clinical practice by an MTA is a requirement for certification. There are also several provincial music therapy associations across Canada, including the Quebec Association for Music Therapy of which most certified music therapists are also active members.
